Store sheets flat on an even, raised surface away from damp walls and direct rain. Standing sheets on edge for long periods encourages bowing, and damp conditions can affect the face before fitting. Keep the stack covered, off the floor and out of direct sun until the carpenter is ready to cut.
The storage checklist
- Stack horizontally on a flat platform or battens, not directly on a rough floor
- Keep the stack level — a single high point under the pile can set a bow into the sheets above it
- Leave a gap between the stack and any outside or damp wall
- Cover the pile against rain, plaster dust and cement splashes
- Avoid storing under leaking pipes, open windows or in direct afternoon sun
Handling without damage
- Lift sheets rather than dragging them off the stack, which scuffs the face below
- Carry large sheets with two people to avoid flexing and corner damage
- Set sheets down on their long edge briefly, not on a corner
- Cut only what is needed for the day so the rest stays protected
On an active site
Renovation sites are wet and dusty by nature. If masonry or plaster work is still running, keep the boards in a separate dry room rather than in the working area. Deliveries timed close to the carpentry stage spend less time exposed.
Before you take delivery
