ACP thickness is chosen by where the panel is fixed and how much unsupported span it has to cover. Signage and light interior work use thinner panels; exterior cladding on a framed structure normally uses thicker ones. Overall panel thickness and the aluminium skin thickness are separate specifications, so confirm both, along with the finish, when placing an order.
Panel thickness and skin thickness are not the same
An aluminium composite panel is two aluminium sheets bonded to a core. The overall panel thickness describes the sandwich; the skin thickness describes the aluminium face alone. Two panels can share an overall thickness yet behave differently because their skins differ, so quote both when you ask for a price.
What decides the thickness you need?
- Whether the panel is interior or exposed to weather
- The span between fixing points on the frame
- How flat the finished surface has to look across large areas
- Whether panels will be grooved and folded at corners
- The fixing system the fabricator plans to use
Typical applications
| Application | What matters most |
|---|---|
| Signage and letter boards | Light weight and clean cut edges |
| Interior feature walls and ceilings | Finish appearance and flatness |
| Shopfront elevations | Weather exposure and how the finish reads from the street |
| Building facades | Span, fixing system and consistent panel batch |
Interior and exterior are specified differently
Panels fixed outside face sun, rain and wind, so the coating and panel specification are chosen for that exposure. Interior panels have lighter demands. Always state the intended use before selecting, because the same finish may be offered in more than one specification.
Checklist before you order
- Confirm the overall panel thickness
- Confirm the aluminium skin specification
- State interior or exterior use clearly
- Fix the finish and colour from a physical sample seen in daylight
- Order colour-critical panels together so the batch matches
- Check the sheet size against your elevation so cutting waste is minimised
Choosing panels in person
Finishes look different in daylight than under indoor lighting, particularly metallics and wood looks. ACP samples from authorised brand partners can be viewed at our showroom near Lakeshar Tent House, Mandi 365 Head. Our ACP buying guide covers the wider selection process.
Frequently asked questions
Is a thicker ACP sheet always better?
Not necessarily. Thickness is matched to the application and span. A heavier panel adds cost and weight without benefit on light interior or signage work.
What is aluminium skin thickness?
It is the thickness of the aluminium face sheet alone, as opposed to the overall panel thickness. Both are specified separately when ordering.
Can interior ACP be used outside?
Exterior positions face sun, rain and wind, so panels and coatings are specified for that exposure. Confirm the intended use before selecting a panel.
