Table tops and shelves normally use thicker, toughened glass with polished or bevelled edges for safety and load. Confirm thickness, toughening and edge finish together when ordering, and tell the supplier the span and how the glass will be supported.
Why toughened glass is used here
Toughened (tempered) glass is heat-treated so that it is stronger than ordinary annealed glass of the same thickness, and if it does break it fragments into small blunt pieces rather than long shards. That behaviour is why it is the usual specification for surfaces people lean on, sit at or place weight on.
Get the measurements right the first time
- Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after treatment — all sizes and holes are set before toughening
- Measure the frame or base accurately, including any overhang you want
- Decide corner treatment — square, rounded or clipped — in advance
- Specify holes or cut-outs for fittings at the order stage
Edge finishes
| Edge | Look | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Polished / flat polish | Clean, smooth straight edge | Most table tops and shelves |
| Bevelled | Angled facet catching light at the rim | Decorative tops and mirrors |
| Rounded / pencil | Softened rounded profile | Surfaces at contact height |
Support and span
A shelf carrying books needs closer supports than a display shelf holding light objects, and a longer span needs thicker glass than a short one. Discuss the intended load and the distance between supports when you order, rather than choosing thickness on its own.

Frequently asked questions
Can toughened glass be cut to size later?
No. Cutting or drilling must be done before toughening, so all dimensions, corners and holes need to be final at the order stage.
Which edge finish is best for a dining table top?
A polished or rounded edge is common for surfaces at contact height, because the rim is smooth to touch. Bevelled edges are chosen mainly for their look.
