Why Edge Banding Matters on Plywood Furniture

What happens at an unsealed edge

When a sheet is cut to size, the protective face laminate stops at the cut. The layered core is left open along that line. In a dry cupboard this may go unnoticed for years; in a kitchen or bathroom, where water and steam are routine, an open edge is the easiest place for moisture to enter. Unsealed edges also chip more readily when doors are knocked or dragged.

Common edge treatments

• Matching edge band applied to the laminate colour, so the joint reads as one surface
• Contrast banding used deliberately as a design line
• Sealing and polishing on veneered or natural-finish work
• Wider banding on exposed shutter edges, thinner on internal partitions

What to check on finished furniture

• The band is bonded flat along its whole length, with no lifting corners
• The joint at the ends is trimmed flush rather than left proud
• All four edges of visible shutters are covered, not just the front two
• Shelf edges that will take repeated contact are banded, not just painted over
