Kitchen base units, sink units and any panel near water are normally built with boiling-waterproof (BWP/marine) grade plywood. Wall units away from direct water are often built in a lighter grade. Whichever grade you use, seal every cut edge — that is where moisture gets in.
Treat the kitchen as three zones
| Zone | Typical exposure | Usual approach |
|---|---|---|
| Sink and base units | Standing water, spills, humidity | Waterproof-grade board, sealed edges |
| Wall / overhead units | Steam and heat | Moisture-resistant board is common |
| Tall / pantry units | Dry, but heavy load | Board chosen for stiffness and screw holding |
Edges matter more than people expect
A waterproof board with an unsealed cut edge is still a weak point. Edge banding, sealing and clean cuts do a large share of the work in keeping a kitchen carcass sound over time.
Plan for the hardware
- Hinges, channels and lift-ups all pull against the board — screw holding matters
- Heavier drawer systems need panels that will not deform over time
- Decide the hardware before finalising the board and shutter thickness
Before you order
- Confirm carcass, shutter and shelf boards separately
- Check the shutter finish — laminate, acrylic or veneer — and match the substrate
- Get the cutting list ready so sheet wastage is minimised
You can compare boards, laminates and kitchen hardware at our showroom in Mandi 365 Head in a single visit, which usually makes the choices easier to finalise.
Frequently asked questions
Do wall cabinets need the same plywood as base cabinets?
Not always. Base and sink units sit closest to water, so they are normally built with a waterproof grade, while wall units are often built with a moisture-resistant grade.
Why is edge sealing important in a kitchen?
Cut edges are the most exposed part of any board. Sealing or edge-banding them limits how easily moisture can reach the core.
