It is the usual choice for table tops, shower enclosures, glass doors and other places where people can contact the glass. Normal glass remains common in framed, protected positions such as windows and cabinet fronts.
What makes toughened glass different?
Toughened glass goes through a controlled heating and rapid cooling process that puts the surface under compression. The result is a panel that resists impact better and, when it does fail, breaks into small granules instead of long sharp pieces. That breakage behaviour is the main safety reason it is specified.
Why must toughening be the last step?
All cutting, drilling and edge work has to be completed before toughening. Once a panel is toughened it cannot be cut or drilled — attempting it will shatter the sheet. This is why exact sizes, cut-outs and hole positions need to be confirmed at the time of ordering.
